Tom Johnson House

Contracting Authority: OPW

Tom Johnson House is an example of the deep retrofit of an existing mid-twentieth centre building designed, procured and delivered by the Office of Public Works for use as contemporary office accommodation by government.

The project involved the complex refurbishment of five storey over basement office building within the curtilage of a several Protected Structures comprising the former Beggar's Bush Military Barracks.

Several careful design interventions have transformed the building into a contemporary work environment, safeguarding the future of this state asset for many decades to come. The project features the introduction of vastly improved levels of natural light and ventilation alongside very significant reductions in the use of embodied and operational carbon and the reposing of existing materials. Currently, it is the headquarters of the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment.
